A six-lesson unit focusing on improving understanding of different religious festivals and non-religious celebrations, based on the question ‘Why are festivals important to religious communities?’ from the Derbyshire syllabus.
Included is a booklet with all the information and activities for the six lessons (images and some information courtesy of BBC Bitesize) with key vocabulary, recap questions on prior learning, discussion points, questions, activities and challenges included. Also included is a PowerPoint for each lesson to support teaching, with notes and relevant links to videos included.
The six lesson sequence is as follows:
Lesson One - Celebrations
Lesson Two - Christian festivals (focusing on Christmas and Easter)
Lesson Three - Diwali
Lesson Four - Ramadan
Lesson Five - Modern Events
Lesson Six - Review lesson
A lesson that gets children to compare Luke and Matthew when describing the birth of Jesus. Included is a lesson presentation and extracts that can then be used to fill in the Venn diagram to highlight similarities and differences between the two gospels.
Three differentiated resources that introduce children to the theme of beliefs, thinking about what the term means before considering non-religious examples and what these beliefs may mean.
A lesson that focuses on Advent and the significance of this period to Christians, comparing this to other people and how the countdown to Christmas is different. Included is the lesson presentation and differentiated worksheets.
A text that looks at the story of St George and how he defended the Christian faith against the Emperor of Nicomedia that then includes three sets of 10 differentiated questions related to the text.
A lesson that focuses on the Nativity, getting children to consider what it is and how they know about it before exploring the story and then recreating it using a storyboard appropriate for their ability.
A fully resourced lesson that gets children to think about the meaning of Christmas, considering what it means to them before considering the Christian meaning. This will then finish with children researching Christian traditions after completing a targeted question slip.
A lesson presentation that focuses on Christian Christmas cards, getting children to compare these to secular ones before deciding what the key elements are and how these match the true meaning of Christmas. Following this, children then have an activity that requires them to create their own Christian Christmas card.
Three lessons that look at focusing on developing understanding of Easter and Ramadan before being able to make comparisons between the two different religious festivals. The lessons also focus on developing reading as well as religious understanding.
The first lesson focuses on Easter. This includes a text with information about Easter. The text also includes a section for vocabulary and a section for adding notes. The text forms the basis of the lesson (which can then be found in the lesson PowerPoints) that includes developing reading fluency of the text, discussion of the vocabulary that forms the left hand side of the text, a chance to discuss Easter, with an opportunity for the class to make notes, and a quiz and discussion to end the lesson.
The second lesson focuses on Ramadan. This follows the same style of the first lesson with a text with information about Ramadan. The text again includes a section for vocabulary and a section for adding notes. The text forms the basis of the lesson (which can then be found in the lesson PowerPoints) that includes developing reading fluency of the text, discussion of the vocabulary that forms the left hand side of the text, a chance to discuss Ramadan, with an opportunity for the class to make notes, and a quiz and discussion to end the lesson.
The third lesson then provides the opportunity for children to revisit the two texts about Easter and Ramadan before engaging in discussions and an activity that require them to consider similarities and differences between Easter and Ramadan, completing a Venn diagram to finalise the sequence of lessons.
A lesson presentation and resources that get children to compare what they know about the Nativity and then compare this to bible extracts. In the lesson, children as a class will create a list of notes for what the 'modern' day nativity looks like before then using the extracts from Luke and Matthew to compare, finding similarities and differences between the modern day version and the bible extracts.
A knowledge organiser linked to Christianity, both in color and black and white. There are also five quizzes included that are linked to the knowledge organiser.
The knowledge organiser includes key vocabulary with definitions, as well as then having different sections of information linked to Christianity.
The quizzes then follow this up with different questions and task styles over the five activities, with answers included for each set.
A fact file about the Five Ks that can be used in a number of ways. This includes potentially using it in reading lessons and creating comprehension activities linked to it, within an R.E lesson looking at Sikhism or the Five Ks in particular and can lead to various activities such as vocabulary based tasks or writing linked to it.
Additionally, it could also be used a model text for information texts and identifying features of an information text.
There are two versions of the fact file: one in colour and one in black and white for printing purposes.
If you want a ready-made reading comprehension linked to the text, the same fact file, three comprehensions and a vocabulary activity can be found for £1 more on the link below:
